RGHLP Open House – December 4th, 2014

RGHLP Open House CelebrationWe invite you to join us at ASU Neilson Library for the Open House Celebration of the Rio Grande Healthy Living Park. This open house event will feature Artist David Montgomery who will be joining us to sign prints of his beautiful painting illustrating the park titled “Agua Es La Vida (Water is Life)”. This is a great opportunity to get a print or set of note cards for yourself or friends for an end of year donation. David will be selling some originals and 30% of sales will go to the Rio Grande Healthy Living Park. 

Food Day Celebration – October 24th, 2014

In honor of National Food Day the LFC is hosting a Make Your Own Pizza night at the Alamosa Senior Center. We’ll learn all about how to make pizza in your own home with delicious, local, healthy ingredients, gluten free. It is bound to be an educational and delicious event! There will be a Sprout Demo by Farmers with Altitude and music by Sweet Radish.

VEGI Garden Kick-off Party – May 3rd, 2014

The Valley Educational Gardens Initiative – VEGI – (formerly the Alamosa Community Gardens) is having their annual Kick-off Party on Saturday from 5-9pm at Denise Vandewalle’s farm north of Alamosa. This is a potluck party with live music by Frank Scott and Friends. Come and join the fun and learn about what is new with VEGI! 



The 4th Annual San Luis Valley Seed Exchange is on Saturday, February 15 from 11am-3pm in the Crestone Charter School’s Rainbow Room, located at 330 Lime Avenue. The seed exchange will feature locally grown seeds from many gardeners and farmers. Everyone is invited to exchange seeds, ideas, experience and energy. Bartering is welcome. Admission is free.

The Healthy Garden Expo is planned for the following weekend, Saturday, February 22, from 11am-3pm, where over 30 tables will show the cycle of health: from the soil, to seed, to you. It will be held in the East Campus Building of Adams State University, located on the corner of 1st & La Veta Avenue, Alamosa. A ?2 donation/admission will be asked, kids under 12 free. Tours & Site Visits

Sauder Family Farm Tour – June 21st, 2014

The first of our summer series of events is coming up! Don’t miss this tour of the Sauder Family Farm on June 21st! from 8am-11am. The Sauders have invited us for a morning of learning and exploration on their family owned Colorado dairy farm. We will meet at the farm promptly at 8am, just in time to see the cows milked! Meet at the LFC office at 7am to caravan to the Sauder Farm. Followed by optional lunch at 4th Street Diner, Saguache.

Container Gardening Workshop with Friend Darr – July 5th, 2014

We are so excited for the first Alamosa Farmers Market of the season this Saturday! To celebrate our excitement we are offering a container gardening workshop with the amazing Friend Darr. See the information on the flyer to reserve a spot today! This will be a fun and informative workshop with expert local farmer, gardener, and builder Friend Darr sharing his growing techniques. 

Grow A Garden Series – February 15th & 22nd, 2014

Everyone is invited to dig into health with the 2014 Grow A Garden Series, two events highlighting organic gardening and the cycle of health in the San Luis Valley.

Gardening 101 Workshops – March 15th, 2014

Join us for our Gardening 101 Workshops!
Ever wanted to grow your own garden? Or change your gardening techniques to be more organic? Valley Educational Gardens Initiative (VEGI), The Local Foods Coalition, and The Alamosa Community Greenhouse will be hosting a three-part introductory workshop series on organic gardening presented by Paul Niebel. Paul will be sharing his wealth of experience in everything gardening from planting to irrigation to harvesting. No experience necessary and gardeners of all abilities all welcome and encouraged to attend. The workshops will be held on March 15th, 22nd and 29th from 10am-12pm at Trinidad State Junior College in Alamosa. Donations (or a potluck snack to share) are appreciated!

Cooking Matters at the Store Day & CM Cooking Classes – April 7th, 2014

Join us for a tour and tasting event at Alamosa City Market. Learn about practical shopping skills receive some free shopping goodies. This is an Open Public event part of La Puente’s Hunger Education Week. We look forward to seeing you there!

Screening of FED UP – February 27th, 2014

We invite you to a community showing of this renowned documentary at 7pm in the Alamosa Presbyterian Church. FED UP is a 2014 documentary exposing the secrets of the food industry, the alarming spread of childhood obesity, and will shake your idea of what we eat and why. Admission is free but donations to cover screening costs will be accepted. 

Coalition Meetings

LFC Coalition Meeting: Supporting VEGI Initiative – June 6th, 2014

The SLV Local Foods Coalition is going to support our partner VEGI (Valley Educational Garden Initiative) as the activity for our June 2014 LFC monthly Coalition meeting. We are going to meet on Friday, June 6th from 9am to 12noon at the Boyd Community Garden on the corner of State and 12th Street for a Workday. Dress to garden! Hats and sunscreen suggested. Potluck to follow in garden at noon. Bring something to share. Please join us and become acquainted with this community gem if you have not already. All community members are welcome!
