Planting Seeds and Growing Community

The San Luis Valley Seed Exchange is a fun and important event that brings people together to learn about seeds, gardening, and taking care of the Earth. This year’s theme was “The Secret Life of Stewardship,” which means learning how to care for the land, plants, and each other.

The San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition was proud to sponsor the event and have a booth there. We talked with lots of people about growing healthy food, supporting local farms, and protecting the environment. There were cool speakers, fun activities, and plenty of seeds to share!

We’re happy to be part of this special event and can’t wait to keep growing with our community.

Sembrando Semillas y Cultivando Comunidad

El Intercambio de Semillas del Valle de San Luis es un evento divertido e importante que reúne a las personas para aprender sobre semillas, jardinería y cómo cuidar la Tierra. El tema de este año fue “La Vida Secreta del Cuidado,” que trata sobre aprender a cuidar la tierra, las plantas y a los demás.

La Coalición de Alimentos Locales del Valle de San Luis se sintió orgullosa de patrocinar el evento y tener un puesto allí. Hablamos con muchas personas sobre cómo cultivar alimentos saludables, apoyar a las granjas locales y proteger el medio ambiente. ¡Hubo presentaciones interesantes, actividades divertidas y muchas semillas para compartir!

Estamos felices de ser parte de este evento tan especial y emocionados por seguir creciendo junto a nuestra comunidad.

We are excited to bring Fifth Day back to the Farm Park for the final weeks of the school year! This past Friday we welcomed a group of ten curious and creative K-2 students from the Boys and Girls Club to float into the science of bubbles.

We read parts of the book "Bubble Homes and Fish Farts" from the Alamosa Public Library to discover the many ways animals use bubbles in nature. We learned that sea otters trap bubbles in their fur to stay warm, star-nosed moles use bubbles to sniff underwater, herring communicate with bubble bursts, and African gray treefrogs make bubbly nests for their eggs!

After our bubble deep dive, the real fun began. Students tested out some store-brought bubble wands before engineering their own with popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, paper towel tubes, and lots of imagination. Check out the photos for a peek into our bubbly Friday adventure.

 

 

 

 

Burbujas!

¡Estamos emocionados de traer de vuelta el programa Fifth Day al Farm Park para las últimas semanas del año escolar! Este pasado viernes dimos la bienvenida a un grupo de diez estudiantes curiosos y creativos de Kínder a 2.º grado del Boys and Girls Club para explorar la ciencia de las burbujas.

Leímos partes del libro “Bubble Homes and Fish Farts” de la Biblioteca Pública de Alamosa para descubrir las muchas formas en que los animales usan burbujas en la naturaleza. Aprendimos que las nutrias marinas atrapan burbujas en su pelaje para mantenerse calientes, los topos de nariz estrellada usan burbujas para olfatear bajo el agua, los arenques se comunican con estallidos de burbujas, ¡y las ranas arborícolas grises africanas hacen nidos burbujeantes para sus huevos!

Después de nuestra exploración burbujeante, comenzó la verdadera diversión. Los estudiantes probaron algunas varitas de burbujas compradas en la tienda y luego diseñaron las suyas propias con palitos de paleta, limpiapipas, tubos de papel toalla ¡y mucha imaginación! Teens ages 14+ are invited to apply for this summer's Rising Stewards program. This paid internship program pairs hands-on farming practice with classroom learning, service projects, and presentations from professionals who work in the outdoors. It's an opportunity for high-schoolers to learn about the world around them, gain leadership experience, and connect to their community in meaningful ways! 

It's free to join, but space is limited, so apply before May 9th for consideration in this summer's program. We will get together twice weekly from the end of May through the beginning of August 2025. Those who are accepted into the program will have lunch, gear, and swag provided. ¡Se invita a adolescentes de 14 años en adelante a postularse para el programa Rising Stewards de este verano! Este programa de pasantía pagada combina práctica agrícola con aprendizaje en el aula, proyectos de servicio comunitario y presentaciones de profesionales que trabajan al aire libre. Es una gran oportunidad para que estudiantes de secundaria aprendan sobre el mundo que los rodea, desarrollen habilidades de liderazgo y se conecten con su comunidad de manera significativa.

La participación es gratuita, pero el espacio es limitado, así que envía tu solicitud antes del 9 de mayo para ser considerado en el programa de este verano. Nos reuniremos dos veces por semana desde finales de mayo hasta principios de agosto de 2025. Quienes sean aceptados recibirán almuerzo, equipo y algunos regalitos. Infrastructure Growth Blooms at the Hub!

Thanks to generous support from the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Valley Roots Food Hub is thrilled to announce a major infrastructure expansion at our Mosca headquarters! This investment helps us reach more remote communities across Colorado—fueling our mission to feed the people.

What’s new? We’ve welcomed Sonny, our shiny new box truck, added a concrete pad for smoother loading and off-loading, and built a loading dock to support seamless cross-docking with our fellow food hubs and producers. These improvements mean stronger connections, more efficiency, and greater access to fresh, local food.
