I’m your Huckleberry

With the help of some amazing volunteers, the Farm Park team planted, grew, and has now harvested a special type of potato from 3/4 of an acre of land.

These potatoes are called Huckleberry Gold, and scientists have studied them because they are better for people with diabetes than regular potatoes. This is because Huckleberry Gold potatoes have less starch and don’t raise blood sugar levels as much.

This is the third year the Farm Park has grown these potatoes, and this time they harvested over 7,000 pounds! These purple potatoes can be bought through the Valley Roots Food Hub or directly from the Rio Grande Farm Park. You can order online at valleyrootsfoodhub.com or email salai.slvlocalfoods@gmail.com to buy some.

Growing Together: SLV Community Food & Ag Action Plan Expands with New Stewards!

On Monday, October 7, the SLV Community Food & Agriculture Action Plan steering committee (called the Project Stewards) held a successful Meet & Greet at the Local Foods Coalition office in Alamosa. A total of 29 people attended, including 7 staff members from the LFC, 9 current Project Stewards, and 13 new participants. By the end of the night, 8 new members joined the Project Stewards, and more people who couldn’t come expressed interest afterward. Now there are 11 new Project Stewards, bringing the total team to 30.

The night was filled with great conversations, tasty local food from the Valley Roots Food Hub, and a shared excitement for improving our local food system. Special guest Mandy Magill talked about a 2025 Regenerative Ag Tax Credit bill and her work to form a Regenerative Stewardship Council, which sparked interesting discussions among the group.

Some of the night’s highlights were brainstorming ideas and choosing goals for the action plan. The excitement in the room showed that great work is ahead!

Creciendo Juntos: ¡El Plan de Acción Comunitario de Alimentos y Agricultura del SLV se Expande con Nuevos Guardianes!

El lunes 7 de octubre, el comité directivo del Plan de Acción Comunitario de Alimentos y Agricultura del SLV (llamado los Guardianes del Proyecto) llevó a cabo un exitoso Encuentro en la oficina de la Coalición de Alimentos Locales en Alamosa. Asistieron un total de 29 personas, incluidos 7 miembros del personal de la LFC, 9 Guardianes del Proyecto actuales y 13 nuevos participantes. Al final de la noche, 8 nuevos miembros se unieron a los Guardianes del Proyecto, y más personas que no pudieron asistir expresaron su interés después. Ahora hay 11 nuevos Guardianes del Proyecto, lo que lleva al equipo total a 30.

La noche estuvo llena de grandes conversaciones, deliciosa comida local del Valley Roots Food Hub y una emoción compartida por mejorar nuestro sistema alimentario local. Empowering Local Businesses: 19 Grants to Strengthen Our Food Community!

We're excited to share that 19 grants have been given to 15 small businesses in our region, including two in Huerfano County. These grants are meant to help small food businesses and family farms become stronger and more resilient in the long run.

For the past year, the Local Foods, Local Places team has been working with the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) on this project, offering support and advice to qualifying farms and food stores.

These grants were made possible by CDA’s Community Food Access program, which helps make healthy food more affordable in low-income areas across Colorado. Statewide, 117 grants were awarded to 98 businesses in 42 counties, with each business receiving an average of $43,000. The most common use of the funds was for cold storage, which helps food businesses keep fresh produce available.

On September 20th, at the Ghana International Market in Aurora, Governor Polis officially announced the grant recipients. He was joined by Agriculture Commissioner Kate Greenberg, CDA’s Community Food Access Program Manager Mickey Davis, and store owner Kusi Appiah, who all spoke at the event. Iava Williams from Local Foods, Local Places was also there to celebrate and see how happy Kusi was about the funds he received for his market. Stay tuned for more info about the CDA Tax Credit!

Empoderando a los Negocios Locales: ¡19 Subvenciones para Fortalecer Nuestra Comunidad Alimentaria!

¡Estamos emocionados de compartir que se han otorgado 19 subvenciones a 15 pequeños negocios en nuestra región, incluyendo dos en el condado de Huerfano! Estas subvenciones están destinadas a ayudar a los pequeños negocios de alimentos y a las granjas familiares a volverse más fuertes y resilientes a largo plazo.

Durante el último año, el equipo de Local Foods, Local Places ha estado trabajando con el Departamento de Agricultura de Colorado (CDA) en este proyecto, ofreciendo apoyo y asesoramiento a las granjas y tiendas de alimentos que califican.

Estas subvenciones fueron posibles gracias al programa de Acceso a Alimentos Comunitarios del CDA, que ayuda a que los alimentos saludables sean más asequibles en áreas de bajos ingresos en todo Colorado. A nivel estatal, se otorgaron 117 subvenciones a 98 negocios en 42 condados, con un promedio de $43,000 por negocio. El uso más común de los fondos fue para almacenamiento en frío, lo que ayuda a los negocios de alimentos a mantener disponible la producción fresca.
