A Win for Local Foods

¡Una victoria para los alimentos locales!

A word from SLV Local Foods Coalition Director, Liza Marron / Una palabra de la directora de la Coalición de Alimentos Locales de SLV, Liza Marron:

Election Night Reporting is Complete for Saguache County and due to my win, Saguache County will have its first majority-woman board of commissioners ever. Thank you to my honorable competitor Jeff Phillips for a fine race. I will start out my tenure as commissioner as a learner and listener. I want to be the best steward of county government and Saguache County constituents’ resources as I can be – along with my two more seasoned commissioners.

This is a bittersweet honor in my life as I have to let go of the leadership of the San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition. We all want this organization to thrive into the future and towards that end, our board and staff with the support of Civic Canopy are working diligently on our transition leadership plan.

I am feeling gratitude for the vote of confidence for a new chapter in my life serving closer to home. I am feeling equal gratitude for the amazing people of the SLV who have worked in partnership to foster an equitable local food system here.

In Local Food We Trust / En Comida Local Confiamos

Warm Regards / Un cordial saludo,

Liza Marron

SLV Cooking Matters: Year-End Summary

From Zoila Gomez & Lois Harvie, our San Luis Valley Cooking Matters Coordinators:

Cooking Matters is happy to end the 2021-2022 fiscal year far exceeding our initial outreach goal for the year. We are very grateful for this past fiscal year and look forward to another fiscal year that starts here in October.

One of the Highlights of this last quarter for the Cooking  Matters Team was to be able to reach out to our very own migrant agricultural workers that come on a H2A visa to work on the fields in Center. Cooking Matters was able to partner up with Project Protect Promotora Network: Promotores Del Valle  de San Luis and offer Cooking Matters at Home programming, Drink to your Health at one of their main events and at the grocery store in Center. Reaching close to 102 participants in the month of September.

“Being able to interact with the H2A Workers after on their day off or after they had a long day of work,  talk about nutrition and get  them an incentive of $10 voucher to the local store it’s huge. I love interacting in Spanish which is the language of my heart. Making them feel at home while educating them in nutrition topics is very important.”

~Zoila Gómez

Reading their comments after the short lesson is a true testimony of the importance and mission of the program.

90% of the H2A Workers that participated are parents and caregivers of kids 0-5.

“Aprendí la importancia de a limitar las azucares agregadas para la salud mía y la de mi familia/ I learned the importance of limiting added sugars for my health and the health of my family” EN

Looking to the Future

Cooking Matters will be focusing in offering virtual and in person Cooking Matters at Home programming in partnership with local agencies.
