San Luis Valley Colorado Gives Roundup

Support San Luis Valley Nonprofits on Colorado Gives Day 2023— Dec. 5th

The holiday season is a time for giving back, and Colorado Gives Day on December 5th provides the perfect opportunity. This annual event brings together donors statewide to support vital nonprofits through ColoradoGives.org.

About Colorado Gives Day

Colorado Gives Day is a powerful statewide movement for charitable giving. This annual event organized through ColoradoGives.org makes donating easy by connecting donors directly to vetted local nonprofits.

In 2022, over $53 million was raised for nonprofits across Colorado through Colorado Gives Day.

In the San Luis Valley (SLV), we can direct donations to organizations addressing crucial local needs like hunger relief, affordable housing, healthcare access, education, animal welfare, and more. Though the SLV includes some of the poorest counties in Colorado, it is also home to many dedicated nonprofits working to create change.

This Colorado Gives Day, we encourage you to give generously to any of these worthy SLV nonprofits making a difference locally. No matter who you choose to support, your donation will stay here in the Valley, fueling impact where needs are greatest.

In a healthy local foods system, retailers and farmers markets are a vital piece of the puzzle. Lucky for us, the San Luis Valley now has a newly opened local food market, Root Cellar Market in Mosca. Congratulations to the Valley Roots Food Hub team on the soft opening last week. They’ve worked so hard on this project. Give them a visit & support local foods! Double lucky for us, because the only farmers market in the Valley hosted on the grounds of a farm, Mercadillo en el Rio, is hosting its first market in less than two weeks! Come support and get to know our famers, shop local goods, and grab a delicious bite of food while you connect with community members. Speaking of community members, Amber Middleton, our very first AmeriCorp vista and former Farm Park Director, will be at the opening market. Come say hi!

There’s a lot happening with our Local Foods Coalition programs and beyond. Read on for the details…

With all this rain, it sure doesn’t feel like Summer Solstice is next week, but… it is! Farmers markets, farm tours, and CSA fresh boxes are going to be going strong all season long. This summer, we encourage you to build a relationship with your farmers and producers beyond just a transaction at the store or farmers’ market. When things shift and change, our relationships will be what carry us through.

A strong local food system is like an elaborate web made up of farmers, land owners, producers, shops and markets, drivers, food hubs, and so many people in between. Our San Luis Valley local food system is made stronger by the connections we make with other local food systems. Our Valley Roots Food Hub has spent the past month touring the operations of Farm Runners, East Denver Food Hub, & Mountain Roots Food Project. It’s in these exchanges that we learn and grow together.

to the land… and to people.”

~Christa Barfield, urban farmer & entrepreneur

All over the Valley, water is flowing and things are going into the ground. We’ll be fed, nourished, and delighted with flavor in the coming months because of the time, effort, and dedication of our farmers and producers. For this, we are grateful.
